For the last two weeks, the Velapassion sailing team has been in Garda for the laser European Championship U21, radial and standard. The first week was allocated for training (see the report here). The second week was for the regatta – with 112 standard sailors and 55 radial sailors registered, the we expected tough competition.
Before the regatta started, all boats had to be measured. This prevents unequal boats which go faster than others. Because it’s a one design class, the regulations are very strict. After half an hour, all our boats were measured and ready for racing.
Every day the start was planned at 1 o’clock pm, which is great for sailors. The first day everybody was prepared for the regatta, sailed a few days in front with our coach Chris Russell, who knew the conditions perfectly in Garda. It was a beautiful day with a nice breeze (15 – 20 knots) coming from the south. Everybody sailed good enough, but there were lots of improvements, even after the progress during the week of training.
The second day started the same as the first one, a stable breeze coming from the south. We were able to sail another 2 races. To achieve good results in these big fleet racing, consistency wins races – Chris Russell. Even if you start at 8 o’clock in the morning! Because thats exactly what happened on the third day.
7 am, when everybody was sleeping in the world, 170 laser sailors left the harbor for racing. In the morning, a northern, cold wind is passing the lake. This gives another perspective to the regatta.
After day 3 the fleets are separated, gold and silver. The first 56 boats in gold, the second 56 boats in silver. This were till the end of the regatta.
Day 4, 5, and 6 were almost the same as the first 3 days, with closely fought but consisten racing for all Velapassion sailors.
Overall it was a very productive regatta, and we learnt a huge amount!
